Fun Things to Do This Summer in New Bedford & the South Coast
New Bedford and Dartmouth
Summer on the South Coast has a rhythm, beach mornings, farm stand stops, and something happening in a park most weekends. In New Bedford, East Beach is the largest public beach in the area, and Fort Taber Park (also known as Fort Rodman) offers waterfront trails, a Civil War-era fort, and sweeping views of Buzzards Bay. Buttonwood Park Zoo is an easy, walkable stop with kids, and the Whaling Museum and Zeiterion Theatre round out rainy-day options.
Dartmouth trades city energy for farmland and quiet coastline. Padanaram Village is a great home base, kayak or paddleboard on Apponagansett Bay, grab ice cream at Dockside or the Oxford Creamery. Jones Park overlooks Clarks Cove, Demarest Lloyd State Park is especially good for families with young kids, and the Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary offers nine miles of trails through marsh and woods.
Fairhaven and Mattapoisett
Fairhaven blends small-town charm with Revolutionary and whaling-era history. Fort Phoenix State Reservation is a favorite for its waterfront setting and small beach, and Fairhaven Town Hall and the Unitarian Memorial Church are worth a stroll past for the architecture alone.
In Mattapoisett, summer really slows down. Harbor Days at Shipyard Park has been a South Coast tradition for decades, local vendors, live music, and a lobster and fish fry. Beyond the festival, the harbor and walkable village center make for an easy summer afternoon.
