Living in Fairhaven, Massachusetts: Coastal Charm, History & Small-Town Living
A Historic Town With a Personal Connection
Fairhaven sits directly across the Acushnet River from New Bedford, connected by the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge, which keeps it close to the city while giving residents a smaller-town feel. You can walk past impressive historic buildings downtown, spend an afternoon near the water, or relax at a neighborhood park, all in the same town.
My husband's family has lived in Fairhaven for generations, and it's the town where we got married. Our kids grew up spending time here with their grandparents. That's part of why I enjoy sharing what makes Fairhaven special, it isn't just a market to me.
Historic Architecture and Neighborhoods
Fairhaven has an unusually impressive collection of historic buildings, many connected to Henry Huttleston Rogers, a Fairhaven native and philanthropist from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Fairhaven Town Hall, the Millicent Library, and the Unitarian Memorial Church give the town center a distinctive character worth slowing down for.
Homes here range from older historic properties and traditional New England houses to capes, ranches, colonials, and waterfront homes, with prices varying by neighborhood, condition, and proximity to the water. For families, Fairhaven runs its own public school system; I'd always encourage checking the latest Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education report cards rather than relying on general rankings alone.
Water, Parks, and Everyday Life
Fort Phoenix State Reservation combines waterfront scenery, beach access, and local history, and the Phoenix Bike Trail gives residents a place to walk, run, or cycle. Those aren't the features that top a listing sheet, but they shape how you actually experience living somewhere.
If Fairhaven has caught your attention, whether you're moving from New Bedford or somewhere else entirely, I'm Sheri Francis with BOLD Real Estate, and Fairhaven is a town I know well. Reach out and I'll walk you through it.
