Tiverton is a town in Newport County, Rhode Island, on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, separated from Aquidneck Island by the Sakonnet River and bordering Westport, Massachusetts. Founded in 1694, Tiverton was annexed to Rhode Island by royal decree in 1746 after a long colonial boundary dispute with Massachusetts, and incorporated as an RI town in 1747. Much of the town sits along a granite ridge running north to south, rising about 170 feet from the bay.
Tiverton has grown from its origins as a farming community into a mix of year-round neighborhoods and a summer waterfront feel, with a population of just over 16,000.
