About the Park

Right on the water next to the Town Wharf, Shipyard Park is the closest thing Mattapoisett has to a town square. A white gazebo anchors the green, ringed by benches and picnic tables looking out over the harbor's moored sailboats and yachts. In the summer, a small food and ice cream shack opens nearby, and the park fills with locals for weekly band concerts, the occasional square dance, and the town's biggest event of the year — the two-day Harbor Days Festival every July.

The gazebo is also a popular wedding venue in summer — worth knowing for buyers who fall for this town and want to celebrate here someday.

A bit of history

Long before it was a place for band concerts, this stretch of waterfront was Holmes Shipyard, one of the working yards that made Mattapoisett famous up and down the eastern seaboard. It was here that the Wanderer — the last whaleship ever built in Mattapoisett — went down the ways, closing out more than a century of local shipbuilding.

Today the site carries that history forward in a much quieter way: as the town's favorite spot to gather, celebrate, and watch the harbor go by.
