About the School

Old Rochester Regional Junior High is where Mattapoisett students continue after finishing Old Hammondtown, joining classmates from Marion and Rochester for grades 7 and 8. Located on Marion Road on a shared campus with the adjacent high school, it serves roughly 410 students with a student–teacher ratio of about 11 to 1, in line with the state average. As the first stop in the three-town regional district, it's where Mattapoisett children begin building friendships that carry through graduation.

A three-town community: Junior High students arrive here from three different elementary systems — Mattapoisett, Marion, and Rochester — making 7th grade a genuine widening of a child's social world after years in a smaller home-town school.

A bit of history

The name "Old Rochester" is a piece of local history in itself. Marion, Mattapoisett, and Rochester were originally all one town — old Rochester — before splitting into three separate communities, which is why a school built in Mattapoisett carries the name of a town it doesn't actually sit in. The junior high building dates to 1961, and starting in 2001 it underwent a major renovation that physically joined it to the neighboring high school on the same Marion Road campus, the layout families still see today. More than sixty years later, the name endures as a quiet reminder that these three towns have always shared more than a school district.
