About the School

George H. Potter Elementary sits on Cross Road in North Dartmouth, serving preschool through grade 5 as one of four elementary schools in the Dartmouth Public Schools district. With about 400 students spread across three classes per grade, plus a dedicated Pre-K classroom with its own separate outdoor recess area, Potter offers 19 classroom teachers along with a range of academic, emotional, and therapy support services for students who need them.

A sister school across town: Potter shares its exact original building footprint and addition layout with Joseph DeMello Elementary in South Dartmouth — the two schools were built to the same design on opposite ends of town.

A bit of history

Potter Elementary opened in 1957 to serve families in the extreme north end of Dartmouth, at a time when the town's population was pushing outward from its older village centers. A decade later, in 1967, a large addition nearly doubled the school's number of classrooms — a direct response to Dartmouth beginning to offer Kindergarten town-wide for the first time. The school takes its name from Judge George H. Potter, who served for many years on the Dartmouth School Committee, helping shape the very system his namesake school would become part of.
