School history
The school is named for one of New Bedford's most remarkable citizens. Born in the city in 1867 to Martha Webb, a formerly enslaved woman who aided the Underground Railroad. Elizabeth Carter Brooks became an educator, social activist, and architect.
In 1901 she became the first African American woman hired to teach in New Bedford's public schools, spending 25+ years in the classroom. She founded the New Bedford Home for the Aged and designed its building, led the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, and championed historic preservation. In 1957, the city named this school in her honor.
