Fun Facts About New Bedford, Massachusetts: A Historic Coastal City to Call Home

Title card for the article: Fun Facts About New Bedford, Massachusetts: A Historic Coastal City to Call Home

The Whaling Capital of the World

New Bedford is known as "The Whaling City," and in the 1800s it became one of the most important whaling ports in the world. You can still feel that history downtown, cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and waterfront views, and the New Bedford Whaling Museum is one of the best ways to see how whalers lived and worked.

Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick, sailed from New Bedford before writing his famous novel, and after escaping slavery, Frederick Douglass lived here with his wife Anna, part of the city's strong abolitionist community and its role in the Underground Railroad. New Bedford's story is maritime history and the story of freedom and social change, together.

A Working Waterfront With Real Character

New Bedford isn't only historic, it's still a busy working port today, especially known for seafood and scallops. Downtown is full of character too: the Whaling Museum, Seamen's Bethel, cobblestone streets, local restaurants, and the historic Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. Fort Taber Park at Clark's Point adds ocean views, walking paths, and military history to the mix.

New Bedford also has a growing arts community, murals, galleries, and festivals that give the city a personality beyond its whaling roots.

A City With Deep Roots and a Bright Future

For homebuyers, New Bedford offers character, convenience, and South Coast charm, from downtown living to coastal neighborhoods. If you're curious what it's actually like to live here, I'm Sheri Francis with BOLD Real Estate, and I'd be glad to show you around. Get in touch anytime.
